A small study with women looking to lose weight on a keto diet revealed a surprising benefit: clearer skin. According to researchers at the Università Telematica Pegaso in Naples, Italy, acne has long been associated with obesity. About 9% of the world's population is affected by acne, most of them being teenagers. Over 45 days, 31 women lost an average of 8% of their body weight and improved their acne by 41.5% (based on the global acne grading scale). All participants adhered to a keto diet of 700-800 calories per day, consisting of 44% fat, 43% protein, and 13% carbohydrates. The researchers also reported that the participants' quality of life improved by an average of 45%. "These results represent a way to manage a skin condition that affects most teenagers and many adults at some point in their lives, causing stress, embarrassment, anxiety, and low self-confidence," explained the study's lead author, Luigi Barrea.
