Just like the drive units, the high-voltage battery used in the two fully electric model variants of the new BMW 5 Series sedan is based on the latest development stage of BMW eDrive technology of the fifth generation. It consists of four modules, each with 72 battery cells, and three modules, each with twelve cells. Thanks to a clever and model-specific arrangement of the modules, the high-voltage battery has a particularly flat design. It can therefore be arranged in a space-saving manner in the underbody of the BMW i5. The interior space for the occupants corresponds exactly to the capacities of the petrol and diesel engine variants of the new BMW 5 Series sedan. The high-voltage battery of the BMW i5 combines its compact dimensions with a high energy density. It provides a usable energy content of 81.2 kWh. In combination with the high efficiency of its electric motors, this results in long-range capabilities for both model variants of the BMW i5. The BMW i5 M60 xDrive achieves a range of 455 to 516 kilometers in the WLTP test cycle. The corresponding values for the BMW i5 eDrive40 are 498 to 582 kilometers according to WLTP.
